Travelling to the Window World 450 is part of the race-weekend experience, but before setting off, it is wise to familiarise yourself with North Carolina’s driving laws. While most rules follow standard U.S. practice, enforcement can be particularly strict during major events such as NASCAR race weekends.
As throughout the United States, vehicles drive on the right-hand side of the road. Visitors from countries where traffic keeps to the left should take extra care at intersections, when exiting parking areas, and when making U-turns near the Speedway.
Speed limits vary by road type. Residential areas are typically limited to 25 mph, rural highways usually allow 55–65 mph, and interstates can reach up to 70 mph. Pay close attention to posted signage, as limits may change suddenly near junctions or access ramps. North Carolina Highway Patrol officers regularly use radar, and penalties for speeding — particularly 20 mph or more over the limit — can be substantial.
Traffic signals are strictly enforced, with cameras operating at some busy junctions. Right turns on red are permitted only after a complete stop, unless signage indicates otherwise. Pedestrians always have priority, and drivers should avoid accelerating through a yellow light if it is safe to stop.
North Carolina applies tough DUI regulations. The legal blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limit is 0.08% for drivers aged 21 and over, and 0.02% for those under 21. During NASCAR weekends, sobriety checkpoints are commonly set up on key routes to and from the Speedway. If you plan to drink, organise a designated driver, rideshare, or taxi in advance.
Seat belts are mandatory for all front-seat occupants, and police may stop a vehicle solely for non-compliance. Rear-seat passengers under the age of 18 must also be restrained. The safest approach is to ensure everyone is buckled up before setting off.
Drivers must yield to pedestrians at marked crosswalks and at intersections without traffic signals. At four-way stops, the vehicle that arrives first proceeds first; if two vehicles arrive at the same time, the one on the right has priority. Expect heavy pedestrian traffic around the Speedway and drive with extra caution.
If signalled to pull over, do so safely on the right-hand side of the road. At night, choose a well-lit area if possible. Keep your hands visible on the steering wheel, follow instructions carefully, and remain calm and respectful at all times.
